Welcome to the Des Plaines Fire Department! This introductory document highlights the expectations, professional attributes and the DPFD Way to newly hired members. An overview of the probationary training period and performance indicators are outlined in this manual.
Newly hired firefighters are expected to review and maintain awareness of all aspects of this training program throughout their probationary period. The general sequence of the program is as follows:
- 2 week pre-academy orientation program
- 9 week fire academy
- 4 week post-academy skills validation program
- Assigned to 10, 24 hour shifts of Operational Readiness Training
- Assigned to shift (Probationary period of 1 year begins)
